Saina Nehwal, along with men’s pair Kushal Raj and Prakash Raj, has withdrawn from the national badminton selection trials for the Asian Games due to fitness issues. The remaining players will compete for spots in the tournament, which will take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8.
1. Saina Nehwal and Men’s Pair Withdraw from Selection Trials Saina Nehwal, a two-time Commonwealth Games champion, will not participate in the national badminton selections trials for the Asian Games due to fitness issues. Men’s pair Kushal Raj and Prakash Raj have also withdrawn from the trials, which will take place at Jwala Gutta Academy of Excellence in Telangana from May 4 to 7. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) will select the team for the prestigious tournament to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8 based on the trials.
2. Other Players Will Compete in Trials Although Saina Nehwal and the men’s pair have withdrawn, the remaining players invited for the trials will compete for spots in the tournament. The national federation has selected some players, including double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, men’s pairing of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and women’s combination of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand for the Asian Games based on their rankings.
3. Players to Compete for Spots in Different Categories Nine men’s singles players, including world championships silver and bronze medallists Kidambi Srikanth and Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, will compete in the trials. Priyanshu Rajawat, national champion Mithun Manjunath, and Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth are among the other players in the competition. Women’s singles shuttlers present in the trials include Aakarshi Kashyap, Malvika Bansod, Ashmita Chaliha, and Unnati Hooda. The trials will select three players for men’s singles and women’s singles, two mixed doubles pairs, and one men’s doubles and one women’s doubles pair.
