New Delhi, India | School Innovation Council(SIC) – In a groundbreaking move, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in partnership with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, has initiated the formation of School Innovation Councils (SIC) in all CBSE-affiliated schools across the country. The primary objective of this initiative is to cultivate a culture of ideation, innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative thinking in the school education system, bridging the gap between schools and the nation’s innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
SIC is a novel concept aimed at systematically nurturing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship within schools, equipping both students and educators with the tools and resources to bring their ideas to life. This marks a significant shift from the traditional rote-learning approach that has dominated the Indian education landscape for decades.
The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) has laid the groundwork for this initiative by emphasizing the need to promote ideation, out-of-the-box thinking, and entrepreneurial skills from the school level. It recognizes the value of aligning school-level innovation with the broader innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in higher education institutions.
SIC’s Approach:
The School Innovation Council will serve as an umbrella program encompassing various initiatives from the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and CBSE. Here’s a glimpse of what the SIC will offer:
- Mindset Change: SIC will work towards transforming mindsets by creating awareness and offering training on ideation, innovation, design thinking, IPR, finance, and product sales among both teachers and students.
- Mentoring and Infrastructure: SIC will utilize existing school infrastructure to mentor and nurture innovation among learners, promoting the development of sustainable ecosystems for innovation, entrepreneurship, IPR creation, and design thinking.
- Collaboration: It will encourage collaboration through exchange programs, field visits, and ideation activities. Moreover, it will enable students to undertake innovative projects and develop prototypes.
- Rating System: The success of SICs will be evaluated through a credit point system based on their performance in various activities. Schools achieving higher star ratings will be acknowledged as top performers, thus fostering healthy competition in innovation.
The Role of School Innovation Council Committee:
The School Innovation Council committee within each school will play a pivotal role in driving the initiative. The committee members will include:
- Chairperson of the Council (School Principal)
- Convener/Activity Coordinator (School Vice Principal or Senior Teacher with relevant experience)
- Teacher Representatives, including Innovation Ambassadors and teachers nominated by the School Principal
- Atal Tinkering Lab Incharge (if applicable)
- Social Media Coordinator (Teacher or non-teaching staff with expertise in social media management)
- Student Representatives, including the School Captain and nominated student members
External Expert Representatives, such as successful entrepreneurs and industry experts, will also be engaged to enrich the council’s capabilities.
Establishing a School Innovation Council:
The process of setting up a School Innovation Council begins with the Executive Representatives (Principal or Vice Principal) of the school initiating the registration process. Schools affiliated with various educational boards, including state boards in India, can establish a School Innovation Council and register through the SIC website.
Outcomes and Reporting:
The establishment of School Innovation Councils is expected to achieve several key outcomes, including the strengthening of the Ideation, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship ecosystem in schools, enhancing awareness among students and teachers, and aligning the school ecosystem with higher education institutions. Schools are required to submit monthly compliance reports through the SIC website.
This initiative is a significant step towards nurturing a generation of innovative thinkers and entrepreneurs, fostering a culture of ideation and creativity from the grassroots level. It aligns with the broader goals of the National Education Policy 2020, positioning India for a brighter future.

In conclusion, the establishment of School Innovation Councils across CBSE-affiliated schools is set to revolutionize the Indian education landscape by fostering a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative thinking. The move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to create a more innovation-driven education system in India. This initiative will not only benefit the students but will also contribute to the growth of the nation’s innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
