New Delhi, September 29, 2023 – The Union Sports Minister, Anurag Singh Thakur, extended a warm welcome to the triumphant Indian athletes who made the nation proud at the 19th Asian Games. The felicitation ceremony took place at the prestigious Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, where the athletes were lauded for their outstanding performances.
A total of 27 athletes, hailing from disciplines such as Shooting, Rowing, and Women’s Cricket, were honored by the Minister for their remarkable achievements. The Women’s Cricket team, under the inspiring leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, scripted history by securing a historic gold medal. Additionally, the Rowing contingent contributed significantly, amassing a total of 5 medals, comprising 2 silver and 3 bronze. However, the lion’s share of medals was earned by the Shooting contingent, with India’s rifle, shotgun, and pistol teams clinching an impressive tally of 13 medals, including 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 5 Bronze.
Minister Thakur, in his address, showered praise upon the athletes and their coaches, acknowledging the years of dedicated effort and perseverance that went into their achievements. He remarked, “I congratulate all the athletes and coaches for their exceptional performances. Some of our history-making rowers come from regions with a scarcity of water, yet they have excelled in a water sports event. We also witnessed a historic gold win in Equestrian.”
The Minister continued, emphasizing the remarkable showing in Shooting events. “In Shooting, we witnessed a remarkable display of spirit and resilience. From TOPS Athlete Sift Kaur Samra, who not only clinched the Gold but also set a world record score in the women’s 50m rifle 3P event, to Khelo India Athlete Ruddranksh Patil, who secured gold in the 10m air rifle, our shooters have performed exceptionally well,” added Shri Thakur.
The felicitation event on Thursday saw the presence of officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India. Moreover, the families and friends of the athletes turned up in large numbers to celebrate the athletes’ achievements.
In conclusion, the felicitation ceremony for the 19th Asian Games medal winners was a heartwarming tribute to the dedication and hard work of India’s sports stars.
