National Updates

  1. ISLRTC and NIOS Partner to Enhance Deaf Education: ISLRTC and NIOS have signed an MOU to enhance Deaf education with Indian Sign Language. The partnership aims to develop quality learning resources, review content, and facilitate examination and evaluation processes for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
  2. Income Tax Returns (ITRs) Reach Record High: Over 6.77 crore ITRs have been filed by July 31, 2023, with a 16.1% YoY growth. This includes 53.67 lakh ITRs from first-time filers, indicating a widening tax base. 61% of ITRs for AY 2023-24 have been processed by the same date.
  3. Quality Control Orders for ‘Smart Meters’ and ‘Welding Rods and Electrodes’: DPIIT has notified 2 Quality Control Orders to improve manufacturing quality standards and ensure safety. Certification will be mandatory for ‘Smart Meters’ and ‘Welding Rods and Electrodes’. Implementation will be enforced six months from the notification date.
  4. Aid and Assistive Devices for Persons with Disabilities: NHPC and ALIMCO have signed an MoU to provide aids and assistive devices to approximately 1,000 Divyangjans near NHPC Projects in North and North Eastern states as part of NHPC’s CSR initiative.
  5. AIIMS New Delhi Campus to Run on Solar Energy: AIIMS and IREDA have signed an MoU to assess the technical feasibility of converting AIIMS New Delhi campus to run on solar energy. A 9 KW rooftop solar plant has already been installed at the campus, aiming to reduce electricity expenditure and minimize carbon footprint.

Business

  1. Income Tax Returns (ITRs) Record High: Over 6.77 crore ITRs have been filed by July 31, 2023, with a 16.1% YoY growth. This includes 53.67 lakh ITRs from first-time filers, indicating a widening tax base. 61% of ITRs for AY 2023-24 have been processed by the same date.
  2. Coal Production and Dispatch in India: In July 2023, coal production in India increased by 14.11% to reach 68.75 million tonnes, compared to 60.25 million tonnes in July 2022. Coal dispatch also saw a significant boost, reaching 74.33 million tonnes in July 2023, compared to 67.46 million tonnes in July 2022, with a growth rate of 10.19%.
  3. Property Cards Issued Under SVAMITVA Scheme: Property cards issued under the SVAMITVA scheme faced challenges like drone availability, delays, manpower shortage, extreme weather, and COVID-19 restrictions. However, 9,590 Property Cards have been prepared in 44 villages, with 3,311 distributed in 18 villages in Andhra Pradesh.
  4. Revamping Panchayats with e-Panchayat Mission Mode Project: The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is implementing the e-Panchayat Mission Mode Project (MMP) under the Digital India Programme to revamp Panchayats and make them more transparent and effective. Various measures have been introduced, including eGramSwaraj for accounting, integrated with PFMS for real-time payments, a Training Management Portal (TMP) for monitoring training progress, and more.
  5. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM): The scheme has benefitted nearly 2.46 lakh farmers, aiming to provide water and energy security, increase farmers’ income, and reduce environmental pollution. Various steps have been taken to achieve the scheme’s targets, including extension, low-cost financing, monitoring, and promotion of indigenous manufacturing for solar modules and components.

International

  1. Anti-Doping Helpline and ‘Speak Up! Portal’: The Government of India launches the Anti-Doping helpline and the ‘Speak Up! Portal’ to report drug abuse or doping activities in sports. Various measures are being implemented to maintain a positive and safe environment in sports.
  2. International Year of Millets: India’s efforts to promote millets and their benefits in combating malnutrition, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture are being recognized globally. India is sharing its knowledge and best practices with other nations to build a more sustainable global food system.
  3. India-Singapore Space Partnership: ISRO’s successful launch of 7 Singaporean satellites further strengthens the bilateral space collaboration between India and Singapore.

Sci-Tech

  1. India’s Push in Semiconductor Industry: India is making significant efforts to become a major player in the semiconductor industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered financial assistance to chip manufacturers setting up facilities in India to position the country as a trusted chip supplier globally.
  2. Green India Mission’s Achievements: The Green India Mission has shown remarkable achievements in increasing the total forest cover and tree cover in the country.

Sports

  1. India’s Resounding Victory in Cricket: In the third and final One Day International cricket match, India achieved a resounding victory by defeating West Indies by 200 runs.

Books & Culture

  1. Yojana Classics by Publications Division: The Publications Division of the Government of India has released ‘Yojana Classics’, a curated series of select works published since 1957 in the development monthly journal ‘Yojana’. The book showcases the art, culture, and heritage of India and is available at Publications Division Book Gallery and website.

Education

  1. Recruitment Drive for Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff: The Ministry of Tribal Affairs extends the last date for online submission of applications for recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff for EMRSs (Eklavya Model Residential Schools) until 18th August 2023.

Youth Affairs and Sports

  1. Financial Assistance for Athletes: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports provides financial assistance for training of athletes to Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), All India Sports Council for Deaf (AISCD), and Special Olympic Bharat (SOB) to promote sports and ensure a safe environment free of harassment and discrimination for all stakeholders.
