Bharat Pavilion Debuts at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Highlighting India’s Flourishing Cinematic Landscape

Cannes, France – May 16, 2024 – In a year marked by a strong Indian presence at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India inaugurated the Bharat Pavilion today. This marks a significant shift from the previously known India Pavilion, reflecting a renewed focus on showcasing India’s storytelling tradition and fostering global collaborations.

The ceremony was led by Secretary of the Ministry, Shri. Sanjay Jaju, and Ambassador of India to France, Shri. Jawed Ashraf. Esteemed dignitaries, renowned filmmakers, and industry leaders gathered to celebrate Indian cinema and its growing international influence.

A Hub for Collaboration and Opportunity

The Bharat Pavilion serves as a dynamic platform, offering a gateway to the diverse landscape of Indian films, talent, and industry opportunities. A series of panel discussions and networking sessions are planned throughout the festival, fostering connections between Indian and international filmmakers.

Government Support for Indian Cinema

Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Sanjay Jaju acknowledged the government’s vital role in supporting Indian cinema. He highlighted the “heartening” number of Indian projects selected for the Cannes Film Festival this year and the government’s support through incentives and official co-productions.

States Take Center Stage

Several Indian states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, are present at the Cannes Film Market this year. Their representatives aim to attract international film productions by showcasing their exquisite locales and promoting state film incentive policies. Notably, this is the first time Jammu & Kashmir is participating, generating significant interest with its scenic beauty and recently established film incentive program.

A Momentous Occasion for Indian Cinema

The inauguration of the Bharat Pavilion signifies India’s growing prominence in the global film industry. The pavilion serves as a powerful platform to not only showcase India’s rich cinematic heritage but also to connect with international partners, fostering collaborations and propelling Indian cinema onto the world stage.
