New Delhi, September 1, 2023 – In a bid to foster a sense of cleanliness, sanitation, and civic responsibility among students, teachers, and the community, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a notification to all affiliated schools, urging their active participation in Swachhata Pakhwada 2023. This 15-day nationwide campaign, organized by the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, will run from September 1st to September 15th, 2023.

A Call to Action for Schools

In a letter addressed to all the Heads of Schools affiliated with CBSE, the board has outlined several activities that schools are encouraged to undertake during Swachhata Pakhwada 2023. These activities aim to instill a sense of cleanliness, sanitation, and hygiene, along with active civic participation among students and the school community.

Key Activities to be Undertaken

  1. Swachhata Shapath: To kickstart the campaign, schools are advised to organize a Swachhata Shapath, where all students and teachers will take an oath during the school assembly, pledging their commitment to cleanliness and sanitation.
  2. Community Engagement: In the first week of Swachhata Pakhwada, schools are encouraged to hold meetings, both in small groups and between parents and teachers, to emphasize the importance of cleanliness, sanitation, and the crucial practice of handwashing.
  3. Facility Assessment and Maintenance: Teachers are tasked with inspecting water and sanitary facilities within the school premises. If necessary, they will prepare proposals for the repair and upkeep of these facilities.
  4. Competitions: Schools are urged to organize various competitions such as Essay Writing, Slogan Creation, Poem Writing, Painting, and Quizzes centered around cleanliness and hygiene practices among students.
  5. Web Awareness: Schools should actively share Swachhata awareness messages on their official websites.

Additional Responsibilities

Beyond these student-centric activities, CBSE also expects teachers and school administrations to take the following steps:

  1. Waste Disposal: Proper disposal of waste materials, including sanitation waste, used masks, damaged furniture, and unusable equipment, is a top priority. Schools are advised to adhere to the established procedures for waste disposal.
  2. Ban on Single-Use Plastics: The use of single-use plastics within school premises is to be strictly prohibited. Awareness campaigns should promote the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastics to mitigate pollution.
  3. Community Outreach: Teachers and students are encouraged to spread the message of Swachhata Pakhwada among family members, neighbors, and citizens in nearby areas.
  4. Hygiene Maintenance: Schools should also focus on daily cleaning and disinfection of frequently used surfaces to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.

Reporting and Documentation

To monitor and document the progress of these activities, CBSE requests that schools provide a brief report along with 3-4 photographs. Schools are required to submit these details through the provided link before September 19th, 2023: Swachhata Pakhwada 2023 Reporting Form.

Participation in Swachhata Pakhwada 2023 not only reinforces the values of cleanliness and hygiene but also fosters a sense of responsibility and environmental consciousness among students, making them active contributors to a cleaner and healthier India.

CBSE’s initiative reflects the growing importance of holistic education, encompassing not only academics but also essential life skills and civic duties. Schools and communities are urged to embrace this opportunity to create a cleaner and more responsible society.
