The Government of India will issue Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) in two tranches for the year 2023-24. The minimum investment is one gram of gold, and the maximum subscription limits vary based on the investor type. The price of the bonds will be determined based on the average closing price of gold. The bonds will have a tenor of eight years, with an option for premature redemption after the fifth year. The interest rate is fixed at 2.50% per annum, payable semi-annually. The SGBs can be used as collateral for loans and will be eligible for trading.

Wholesale Inflation in May Hits 7-Year Low at -3.48%: Factors and Implications

Wholesale inflation in May 2023 has reached its lowest point in over seven years, with a decline of -3.48%. This decrease is mainly due to lower prices of mineral oils, basic metals, food products, textiles, non-food articles, crude petroleum, natural gas, and chemical products. The retail inflation has also dropped to a 25-month low of 4.25%, influenced by reduced prices of food and fuel items. The Reserve Bank of India’s efforts have contributed to the consistent decline in retail inflation for the past four months.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation has remained below 6% for three consecutive months, the lowest being 4.23% since April 2021. The fall in international prices of LPG and kerosene has further contributed to the softening of retail inflation in May. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) figures for May 2023 are compiled with a response rate of 89.8%, subject to revision according to the final policy. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) releases the wholesale price index numbers monthly, with a two-week lag.
