Defense Updates 2nd May’2023: Indian Naval Ships arrive in Singapore for ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023), while Air Marshal Saju Balakrishnan takes over as Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command and Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari takes over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Air Command.

The Indian Navy and Air Force have announced new appointments in key commands. This update covers the latest news from Indian Naval Ships arriving in Singapore for a maritime exercise, to the change of command in Andaman and Nicobar Command and South Western Air Command.

Defense Updates 2nd May’2023 in Brief

1. Indian Naval Ships arrive at Singapore to participate in the AIME-2023 Indian Naval Ships Satpura and Delhi, led by RAdm Gurcharan Singh, have arrived at Singapore to participate in the ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023). The exercise is scheduled from 02 to 08 May 2023. The Harbour Phase of the exercise will take place at Changi Naval Base from 02 to 04 May 2023. On the other hand, the Sea Phase will be held from 07 to 08 May 2023 in the South China Sea. The exercise aims to strengthen the bond between the Indian Navy and the ASEAN navies. The two Indian Navy ships, Delhi and Satpura, will participate in the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX-23) and the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC) being hosted by Singapore.

2. Air Marshal Saju Balakrishnan takes over as Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command Air Marshal Saju Balakrishnan has taken over as the 17th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) on 01 May 2023. The Andaman and Nicobar Command is the only joint-services command in India and serves as a model for the country’s planned theaterisation of Army, Navy, and Air Force capabilities. Air Marshal Saju Balakrishnan, a distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1986. The Air Marshal has held various key positions throughout his illustrious career, including CO of a Bison Squadron, the first Commanding Officer of an AWACS Squadron, and Air Officer Commanding at the prestigious AF Station at Jodhpur. Before assuming Command of ANC, he was the Senior Air Staff Officer at the IAF Training Command at Bengaluru.

3. Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari takes over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Air Command Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari took over as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Air Command (SWAC) at Gandhinagar on 01 May 2023. He succeeds Air Marshal Vikram Singh, who superannuated on 30 Apr 2023. Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari was commissioned in the Fighter Stream on 07 Jun 1986. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and passed out as the President Gold Medalist. The Air Marshal has rich field experience, which includes operational testing of various weapons and systems, primarily on the Mirage-2000. He was actively involved in operations and took part in many important missions during the Kargil conflict. He has also commanded a frontline fighter base in the Rajasthan sector. Prior to assuming charge as the AOC-in-C SWAC, the Air Marshal was Deputy Chief of the Air Staff at Air HQ (VB).
