1. Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023 Focuses on Transforming India into a Knowledge-based Society
The Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023 concluded with a strong emphasis on transforming India into a knowledge-based society. Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, reiterated the commitment to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) and announced plans to develop 300 institutions for teacher capacity building. The event witnessed the signing of 106 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across various sectors, promoting collaboration between education and industry. The exhibition held during the event drew a massive audience of nearly 2 lakh attendees over two days.
2. Ministry of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Signs 106 MoUs to Foster Innovation and Research
On the occasion of Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023 and the 3rd anniversary of the National Education Policy, the Ministry of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship signed 106 MoUs with esteemed organizations. These partnerships aim to foster innovation, research, and knowledge exchange in various domains, strengthening collaboration between education and industry-academia linkages. The MoUs cover school education, literacy, higher education, and skill development, emphasizing the government’s commitment to equipping the youth with cutting-edge skills and knowledge for a bright future.
3. Udhampur Constituency Witnesses Remarkable Development Projects Under PM Modi’s Leadership
Udhampur constituency has experienced significant developmental projects in the last 9 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notable projects include the world’s highest rail bridge and Asia’s longest road tunnel. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister, highlighted the constituency’s progress and praised PM Modi’s focus on the region. The area has also witnessed the establishment of medical colleges, industrial parks, seed processing plants, and other key infrastructural developments. The improved road and highway network have contributed to Udhampur’s remarkable development compared to other constituencies in the country.
4. Measures to Enhance Financial Health of Distribution Companies (Discoms)
The government has introduced additional measures to enhance the financial health of Distribution Companies (Discoms) by streamlining accounting, reporting, billing, and subsidy payments. The Ministry of Power has prescribed rules to ensure transparency in subsidy accounting and timely payment by states. State Commissions will set Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) loss reduction trajectories for tariff determination. Prudent costs for power procurement and distribution system development will be considered for tariff approval. Gains or losses due to AT&C loss trajectory deviations will be shared between Discoms and consumers. The Central Electricity Authority will issue guidelines for the operation and maintenance of the distribution system. The Return on Equity (RoE) will be aligned with CERC’s Tariff Regulations with appropriate modifications to account for distribution business risks.
5. Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive Launched to Boost Edible Oil Production
As part of the National Mission for Edible Oils- Oil Palm, the government has launched a Mega Oil Palm Plantation drive from July to August 2023 across India. The initiative aims to increase oil palm production area to 10 lakh hectares and boost Crude Palm Oil production to 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26. State Governments and major oil palm processing companies are actively participating to cover an area of roughly 7750 hectares. This initiative seeks to enhance edible oil production, reduce import burden, and promote an ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.’ The drive is taking place in states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
6. Union Minister Addresses SemiconIndia 2023, Highlights India’s Commitment to the Semiconductor Industry
Union Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, addressed the SemiconIndia 2023 conference, showcasing India’s commitment to the semiconductor industry. Under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is making significant progress towards achieving its semiconductor ambitions. The conference saw participation from industry, academia, and government, focusing on various themes such as Next-Gen Computing, semiconductor packaging, and future designs. The discussions highlighted India’s potential in R&D and innovation and the need for investment opportunities in the semiconductor ecosystem. The conference also emphasized the importance of a sustainable semiconductor supply chain in India.

1. RBI Designates ‘Jamakarta Shiksha aur Jagrukta’ (DEA) Fund
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has designated the ‘Jamakarta Shiksha aur Jagrukta’ (DEA) Fund for the purpose of refunding unclaimed deposits. An amount of ₹5,729 crore has been allocated to banks from the DEA Fund. RBI has notified the ‘Deposit Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014’ regarding unclaimed deposits.
2. TRAI Issues Draft Telecommunication Consumer Education and Protection Fund
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has unveiled the draft Telecommunication Consumer Education and Protection Fund (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2023, seeking inputs from stakeholders.
3. Bhaykhala Railway Station Named Oldest Railway Station in India
Bhaykhala Railway Station has been recognized as the oldest railway station in India. After five years of extensive restoration efforts, the 169-year-old railway station located in Central Mumbai has been carefully revitalized as India’s oldest railway station. As a result of this remarkable achievement, the station has been honored with the prestigious Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation Award by UNESCO.
4. R. Seshasayee Appointed as the Chairman of Asian Paints
R Seshasayee has been appointed as the new chairman of Asian Paints. The board of Asian Paints has approved the appointment of Seshasayee as the chairman of the company with effect from October 1, 2023. He will remain on this post till January 22, 2027. Seshasayee brings extensive experience from his tenure as the Managing Director of Ashok Leyland Limited, serving from 1998 to 2011, as Executive Vice-Chairman from 2011 to 2013, and as Non-Executive Vice-Chairman from 2013 to 2016.
5. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen Announces Resignation
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has decided to resign from his post after almost four decades, making him one of the longest ruling leaders in the world. He has announced that he will resign in early August and hand over power to his son. Recently, his party again won all the seats in the non-competitive elections. Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation.
6. Uttam Singh to Lead Junior Indian Hockey Team
Forward player Uttam Singh has been appointed as the captain of the junior Indian hockey team for the upcoming four-nation tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany. Bobby Singh Dhami will serve as the vice-captain of the team. The tournament, scheduled from August 18 to 22, will witness India competing against England, Spain, and host Germany. Hockey India has announced the 20-member squad for the prestigious event.
7. Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Second Indian Bowler with Most International Wickets
India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second Indian bowler with the most wickets in international cricket. Ashwin secured his 712th international wicket during the second innings of the Trinidad Test against the West Indies. In the process, he surpassed former Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh. Among Indian players, he is now only behind Anil Kumble (953) in terms of wickets.
8. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur Appointed as Chief Justices
Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, while Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The collegium system recommended the appointment of Justice Devendra Upadhyay of the Allahabad High Court as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
