1. Meeting of Range Countries for the Conservation of Migratory Birds and their Habitats
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme/Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS), organized a meeting of Range Countries to strengthen conservation efforts for migratory birds and their habitats in the Central Asian Flyway (CAF) in New Delhi from May 2 to May 4, 2023.
2. The Inauguration and Objectives of the Meeting : Migratory Birds Conservation
The meeting was inaugurated by Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. In his inaugural address, the minister emphasized the importance of adopting a sustainable lifestyle to ensure the continued existence of migratory birds and their coexistence with all life forms.
3. Attendees and Discussions at the Meeting
The meeting was attended by eleven countries in the CAF region, as well as representatives of various organizations and scientific institutions. The attendees deliberated on an institutional framework for the Central Asian Flyway, discussed priority areas for implementation, and agreed on a draft roadmap for updating the CMS CAF Action Plan. The meeting was an opportunity for CAF Range States to collaborate and exchange ideas and best practices for the sustainable conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.
4. Institutional Framework and its Formalization
The meeting led to an agreement on the modalities of an institutional framework mechanism aimed at developing a coordinated approach to the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. The attendees agreed to further strengthen and formalize this initiative, which was seen as a significant step towards the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.
5. Field Visit and Learning Best Practices
The delegates also undertook a field visit to the Sultanpur National Park in Gurugram, Haryana, to understand the management of bird sanctuaries and learn about the best practices being adopted in India for the management of bird sanctuaries.
