Odisha Government announces temporary closure of schools due to heatwave

The Odisha Government has announced the temporary closure of all government and private schools, including anganwadis, up to the 10th class until April 16, 2023. This decision has been taken in response to the intense heat wave condition prevailing in the state.

As per the latest update, the health of the students has been given top priority, and the authorities have decided to close schools for five days, from April 12 to 16, 2023. The Information and Public Relations Department has released an official tweet confirming the same.

Previously, on April 11, 2023, the state administration had issued a formal notification that the school schedules for classes 1 through 12 would be modified due to the heatwave. The classes had been scheduled from 7 AM to 11:30 AM, but due to the heat waves, the authorities had to announce the closure of schools.

The Odisha heatwave advisory suggests that schools, colleges, and other academic/technical institutions must take extra care to ensure the availability of drinking water. Sufficient ORS must be kept in schools and colleges and provided to students and staff requiring the same. Outdoor activities must be restricted to avoid students being exposed to heatwave conditions.

IMD Predicts a Rise in Temperature

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an increase in temperature until April 16 across the state. On April 11, 2023, the temperature in the state capital was predicted to reach 41 degrees Celsius, after recording 39.7 degrees on April 10. Jharsuguda in the western region was the hottest place on Monday, recording 40.4 degrees Celsius, and Baripada in the north recorded 40 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has predicted that the state’s average temperature might exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some places by April 12, 2023. Therefore, the closure of schools has been announced to safeguard the health and well-being of students.

In conclusion, the Odisha Government’s decision to temporarily close schools until April 16, 2023, due to the intense heat wave condition is commendable. The health and well-being of students should be the top priority of any government, and this decision reflects that. It is also essential for schools and colleges to take necessary precautions, such as ensuring the availability of drinking water, to avoid any health-related issues. It is crucial to stay updated on the latest updates and follow the guidelines issued by the authorities to ensure the safety of everyone.
