The 3rd SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN Roadshow at IIT Delhi, led by Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, aims to stimulate next-gen semiconductor designers, promote co-development of IPs, and foster indigenous chip development. Join us to witness India’s journey towards becoming a global semiconductor hub.
Stimulating Next-Gen Semiconductor Designers and Promoting Co-development and Joint Ownership of IPs
MeitY (Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology) has been organizing a series of roadshows across the country to stimulate the next generation of semiconductor designers, promote a culture of co-development and joint ownership of intellectual properties (IPs), and foster the indigenous development of semiconductor chips for various industries such as automobiles, mobility, communication, and computing. Previously, the 1st roadshow took place at Karnavati University, Gandhinagar, on October 18, 2022, and the 2nd roadshow at IISc Bangalore on February 24, 2023.
Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of architecting, designing, and co-designing next-generation devices and electronic products in India through schemes like the Semicon India Future Design Program. In December 2021, the Indian government initiated the India Semiconductor Mission, allocating Rs 76,000 crore in incentives to attract investments in the sector.
The Minister expressed his intention to expand the Semicon India program to reach every student and every college in order to inspire and engage young Indians in the Semicon India journey. He called upon industry leaders, both global and Indian, to join forces in encouraging students, startups, and entrepreneurs to seize the SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN opportunity.
Catalyzing the Semiconductor Ecosystem in India and Supporting SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN Start-ups
The 3rd Roadshow will provide a platform for global semiconductor leaders to exchange visions and ideas, thereby catalyzing the semiconductor ecosystem in India. During the event, several significant announcements will be made:
- SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN start-ups approved for support under the DLI Scheme: Two futureDESIGN start-ups have received approval for support under the DLI (Design Led Incubation) Scheme. These start-ups will receive financial support and design infrastructure to develop state-of-the-art system-on-chip designs. Their focus will be on implementing innovative silicon designs in growth areas such as automotive, mobility, and computing. More SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN start-ups are expected to be approved in the coming weeks.
- Sequoia Capital India’s foray into the semiconductor space: Sequoia Capital India, the largest venture capital firm in the region, recognizes the tremendous potential for deep tech startups to transform India into a global center for custom silicon IP and hardware innovation. They will announce their investments in two Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) start-ups.
- ChipIN Centre at C-DAC Bangalore: MeitY has established the ChipIN Centre at C-DAC Bangalore, dedicated to serving the semiconductor design community in India. The facility acts as a one-stop center, providing semiconductor design tools, fab access, virtual prototyping hardware lab access, and aggregate services for chip fabrication in Indian and overseas foundries. Ansys will collaborate with C-DAC Bangalore to support the center and facilitate the learning of essential EDA (Electronic Design Automation) technologies for chip design projects.
- Renesas Electronics Corporation introduces an NB-IoT chipset for the Indian market: Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has introduced the RH1NS200, an LTE NB-IoT chipset specifically designed for the Indian market. This chipset is capable of seamless operation on the networks of all major Indian telecommunications carriers. It presents an ideal solution for the Indian smart metering market, which is projected to reach approximately 250 million units over the next five years. The chipset’s applications extend beyond smart metering and can be utilized in asset tracking, lighting, security, and various other sectors. Notably, the RH1NS200 chipset boasts incredibly low power consumption of only 1uA in deep sleep mode, significantly prolonging battery life.
Driving Innovations with the Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) Program – SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN
In alignment with the Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) program led by Hon’ble MoS Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) has successfully completed the design and development of the VEGA series of microprocessors. These processors encompass 32/64-bit single, dual, and quad-core superscalar out-of-order high-performance processors based on the RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture. The first SoC (System-on-Chip) chip in the VEGA series, named THEJAS32, a 32-bit single-core SoC, has been successfully fabricated. To facilitate development and innovation, a development platform called ARIES has been created, which includes four different developer’s kits: ARIES V2, ARIES Micro, ARIES IoT, and ARIES V3. These indigenous “Made in India” products are specifically designed for learning, embedded system design, and IoT applications. The development boards, based on the RISC-V ISA-compliant VEGA Processor, offer user-friendly hardware and software. Additionally, the complete ecosystem for embedded system design, including Board Support Packages, an integrated toolchain, IDE plug-ins, and a debugger, is readily available, accompanied by comprehensive support documentation.
Empowering Start-ups and Fostering Entrepreneurship in Design & Innovation – SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN
With these initiatives and advancements, numerous start-ups are expected to emerge across the country, breaking through initial entry barriers and fostering an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation in design. This will pave the way for the development of indigenous IP cores, chips, and systems for various application areas, such as 5G/IoT, AI/ML, and the automotive and mobility sectors, not just for India but for the global market as well.
The SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN Roadshow at IIT Delhi serves as a significant platform to drive these goals forward. By promoting collaboration, supporting start-ups, and harnessing the potential of cutting-edge technologies, India aims to establish itself as a global hub for semiconductor design and innovation. The roadshows organized by MeitY, along with the concerted efforts of industry leaders, are crucial steps in realizing this vision and positioning India at the forefront of the semiconductor industry.
In conclusion, the SemiconIndia FutureDESIGN Roadshow, led by Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, marks another milestone in India’s journey to becoming a global leader in semiconductor design and innovation. With the support of government initiatives, industry partnerships, and the entrepreneurial spirit of start-ups, India is poised to revolutionize the semiconductor landscape and contribute to technological advancements on a global scale. The roadshow at IIT Delhi serves as a testament to India’s commitment to nurturing talent, fostering collaboration, and driving the semiconductor industry towards a brighter future.
