Design Validation Trial
On April 30, 2023, the Design Validation Trial of the Underground Ammunition Storage Facility was carried out successfully. During the trial, a detonation of 5,000 kgs of TNT was carried out in one of the chambers of the facility. The trial was conducted with precision and utmost safety in place, and all the parameters recorded during the trial matched the estimated values.
Advantages of the Underground Ammunition Storage Facility
The Vertical Shaft design of the Underground Ammunition Storage Facility developed by CFEES has several advantages over current designs. Firstly, it reduces the required safety distances and cost by 50 per cent. Secondly, it ensures higher safety of ammunition stored from any kind of aerial attack or sabotage. The safety distance has been established up to 120 Metric Ton (40 Metric Ton Net Explosive Content) ammunition storage per chamber based on the results of the trial.
Use by the Armed Forces
The Armed Forces face difficulty in storing ammunition due to non-availability of adequate land, as large safety distances are required for ammunition storage structures. The new design of the Underground Ammunition Storage Facility significantly reduces the land footprint requirements, making it an ideal solution for the Armed Forces. Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO congratulated the teams involved in the successful trial and stated that the facility can be extensively used by the Armed Forces for storage of all types of ammunition.
