The Director General of the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), Shri Balaji Srivastava, took center stage to introduce the event. In a momentous move, he also launched the official website of Hackathon Vimarsh 2023, which can be accessed at vimarsh.tcoe.in. The event was graced by several distinguished personalities, including Shri Ajay Kumar Sahu, Chairman of the Telecom Centre of Excellence, Shri Chandraker Bharti, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Smt. Anupama Nilekar Chandra, ADG of BPR&D, Smt. Rekha Lohani, Director (Modernisation) at BPR&D, and Shri Rajesh Kumar, CEO of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
The Hackathon Vimarsh 2023 is a testament to the government’s commitment, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, to make India a cyber-safe nation. In today’s interconnected world, where cyber threats loom large, ensuring the safety of our citizens in the digital realm is a top priority. The Ministry of Home Affairs recognizes that the rapid adoption of 5G technology can play a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement agencies and strengthening the nation’s cybersecurity.
The Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) has been designated as the Centre of Excellence for 5G applications within the Ministry of Home Affairs. As part of this initiative, BPR&D is organizing the Hackathon on 5G technology, aimed at developing cutting-edge tools to address the evolving challenges faced by Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs).
The Hackathon features nine problem statements, each addressing a unique aspect of the role of 5G technology in law enforcement. These problem statements, along with detailed descriptions and multimedia content, are available on the dedicated website vimarsh.tcoe.in. This platform provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges that the hackathon seeks to address, inviting students, startups, and MSMEs to participate and contribute their innovative solutions.
The Hackathon will unfold in three stages:
- Ideas Screening: The first two stages, I and II, will be conducted virtually. Participants will submit their innovative ideas for solving the problem statements. The jury panel, consisting of experts from BPR&D, I4C, the Department of Telecom (DOT), and industry professionals, will evaluate these ideas.
- Physical Mode: Stage III will be held at nodal centers in physical mode, where 5G testbeds, private networks, and labs will be made available. This stage will allow participants to transform their concepts into tangible solutions and prototypes.
Following the conclusion of Stage III, one winner for each problem statement will be announced during the Valedictory Session in February 2024. These winners will receive an award of Rs 1.5 Lakhs in recognition of their contributions.
Importantly, a substantial budget of Rs 2.5 Lakhs has been earmarked for the productization of winning ideas and the development of Proof of Concepts (POCs). This funding will enable further incubation and incentivization of innovative solutions, ultimately leading to the creation of practical tools for the use of Law Enforcement Agencies.
The Curtain Raiser of Vimarsh 2023 marks the beginning of a transformative journey in law enforcement, where technology meets security, and innovation meets the nation’s safety. The Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with BPR&D, DOT, and TCOE, is set to propel India into a new era of cybersecurity and policing. As the world embraces the potential of 5G technology, India is poised to be at the forefront of utilizing this transformative technology for the betterment of its citizens and the security of the nation.
In conclusion, the Vimarsh 2023 National Hackathon is a testament to India’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve in cybersecurity and law enforcement. It’s an opportunity for innovators to shape the future of policing and contribute to building a safer, more secure India in the digital age.
