1.2 Admissions Open: Sindhu Central University Offers Post-Graduate Programs in Ladakh
Sindhu Central University in Ladakh will offer three post-graduate programs in the first academic year, including MTech Energy Technology & Policy, MTech Atmospheric & Climate Sciences, and MA Public Policy. 1.4 Union Cabinet Approves Continuation of Coal and Lignite Exploration Scheme: Boosting India’s Coal Resources
The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the “Exploration of Coal and Lignite Scheme,” allocating Rs. 2980 crore for the period of 2021-2026. The scheme involves regional and detailed exploration for coal and lignite, covering a total area of approximately 1950 sq. km. The exploration is crucial for estimating coal resources and preparing project reports for coal mining. Geological reports from the exploration are used for auctioning new coal blocks, with the costs recovered from successful allocatees.
1.5 Cyclone Biparjoy Approaching Gujarat: Monsoon Conditions and Alerts
Cyclone Biparjoy is moving towards Gujarat at a slow speed. Monsoon conditions are favorable for its onset in Kerala and further advancement in various regions. Heatwave conditions are expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. 2.1 Bangladesh Power Crisis: PM Hasina Assures Improvement within 10-15 Days
Bangladesh is facing severe power shortages, leading to frequent blackouts and hardships for the people. The power supply is 25% below demand, the worst crisis since 2013. Many electricity generating plants are shut down, and fuel shortages further contribute to the problem. Unprecedented heatwaves and foreign exchange shortage exacerbate the situation. Prime Minister Hasina assures improvement within the next 10-15 days, attributing the crisis to international factors and high temperatures.

3.1 India Emerges as 2nd Largest Steel Producer Globally with Remarkable Growth: Minister
India is now the second-largest producer of crude steel globally, with a significant increase in production and consumption. The country has become a net exporter of steel, surpassing its import numbers. The Steel CPSEs have utilized their own resources for CAPEX and paid a substantial dividend to the Indian government. The government has introduced vehicle scrapping centers and plans to recycle end-of-life vehicles for steel production.
The National Steel Policy aims to enhance the steel industry’s capacity and meet the increasing demand. The DMI & SP Policy has resulted in import substitution, and the Productivity Linked Incentive Scheme has attracted significant investment and generated employment opportunities. The Ministry of Steel is working on labeling Indian steel under the “Brand India” initiative and is actively involved in infrastructure development. Additionally, the ministry is focused on decarbonization and has formed task forces to identify green steel production strategies.
3.2 Revised Exchange Rate for Turkish Lira: Effective from 8th June 2023
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has amended the exchange rate for Turkish Lira in relation to Indian rupees for imported and export goods, effective from 8th June 2023. The new rate is 3.85 for imported goods and 3.60 for export goods.
3.3 BSNL’s Revival Package: Spectrum Allotment and Increased Capital for 4G/5G Expansion
Union Cabinet approves third revival package for BSNL worth Rs. 89,047 crore, including 4G/5G spectrum allotment. Authorized capital of BSNL to increase from Rs. 1,50,000 crore to Rs. 2,10,000 crore. BSNL aims to provide nationwide 4G and 5G services, rural coverage, high-speed internet, and CNPN services. Previous revival packages resulted in reduced debt and operating profits for BSNL. BSNL has achieved growth in home fiber segment. India’s own 4G/5G technology is being deployed on the BSNL network.
3.4 Boosting Farmer Income: Increased MSP for Kharif Crops Ensures Remunerative Prices
MSP for Kharif Crops increased to ensure good prices for farmers. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the increase, aiming to provide fair remuneration to farmers and encourage crop diversification. Expected margins for farmers are highest for bajra, followed by tur, soybean, and urad. The government has been promoting non-cereal crops and launched initiatives to support crop diversification. Foodgrain production in the country reached a record high of 330.5 million tonnes, a significant increase from the previous year.
3.5 India’s Economy Sees Unprecedented Growth in Consumption and Investment: World Bank Report
India experiencing unprecedented growth in consumption and investment, according to the World Bank. The country’s economic growth rate is projected to be 6.3% for the fiscal year 2023-24. Despite a reduction in the growth forecast, India’s services sector remains strong and is expected to create jobs. The global growth rate is predicted to decline, affecting job creation. Fitch Ratings estimates India’s GDP growth to be 6% for the same fiscal year. Recent reports highlight positive changes in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, including improvements in infrastructure, corporate tax rates, and digital transactions.
3.6 Indian Government Removes Ceiling for Tur, Urad & Masur Procurement to Boost Production
Ceiling for procurement of Tur, Urad & Masur removed by the Indian government to boost production. Farmers can now sell any amount of these pulses under the Price Support Scheme. Strict enforcement of stock limits and monitoring of prices are also implemented. This decision aims to enhance domestic production and prevent hoarding.

Union Sports Ministry plans to attract top professionals in sports management for the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) by upgrading the salary structure and hiring from renowned institutes worldwide. The aim is to expand the team and attract better professionals to manage India’s Olympic Program under TOPS. Job postings will be announced on the Sports Authority of India (SAI) website later this month.

The State Food Safety Index will be released on World Food Safety Day to encourage states to improve their food safety systems. The index will be unveiled by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and winners of the Eat Right Challenge will be recognized. 5.3 Fit India Quiz 2022 State Rounds: Watch the Biggest Sports and Fitness Quiz on Fit India’s Social Media!
State rounds of the 2nd Fit India Quiz will be aired on Fit India’s social media handles starting June 10. The quiz is India’s largest sports and fitness quiz with a cash prize of ₹3.25 crore. It is being held across 36 states and Union territories, with a total of 84 episodes streamed on Fit India’s social media pages. The State/UT champions will compete in the National Finals, and the State finals will be telecast on Doordarshan. The quiz has seen significant participation, with 348 schools and 418 students selected for the State/UT round. The quiz aims to provide a platform for students to showcase their sports and fitness knowledge and feature on national television.
