Angdaan Mahotsav: Organ donation is a noble act that can save multiple lives and contribute to the well-being of society. To highlight the significance of organ donation and create awareness among the masses, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, observes the ‘Indian Organ Donation Day’ on August 3, 2023.
This year, the event coincides with the celebration of 75 years of India’s independence, known as the ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.’ In commemoration of the first deceased donor organ transplant in the country after the promulgation of the ‘Transplantation of Human Organs Act’ on July 8, 1994, the event has been named ‘Angdaan Mahotsav.’ The campaign aims to promote healthy lifestyles, dispel myths about organ donation, and encourage more citizens to participate in this noble cause.

The Importance of Organ Donation
Organ donation is a life-saving practice that involves the transplantation of healthy organs and tissues from one person to another. It plays a crucial role in saving lives and improving the quality of life for those suffering from end-stage organ failure. One organ donor has the potential to save up to eight lives, making it a powerful way to give back to society and leave a lasting legacy.
The Organ Transplantation Gap
Despite the importance of organ donation, there remains a significant gap between the number of patients in need of organ transplants and the availability of organ donors. This disparity can be addressed through awareness campaigns like the ‘Angdaan Mahotsav,’ which aim to educate people about the benefits of organ donation and encourage them to register as donors.
National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO)
The Government of India has taken proactive steps to streamline the organ donation process by establishing the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). NOTTO serves as the apex organization for organ procurement and distribution at the national level. Additionally, similar organizations operate at regional and state levels to ensure an efficient and organized system for organ transplantation. These organizations maintain a national registry of organ donors and recipients, making it easier to match donors with those in need.
Objectives of the ‘Angdaan Mahotsav’ Campaign
The ‘Angdaan Mahotsav’ campaign focuses on achieving the following objectives:
- Promoting Healthy Lifestyles & Wellness: By encouraging healthy living, the campaign aims to reduce the demand for organ transplantation. Adopting healthy habits can significantly lower the risk of organ failure and related illnesses.
- Spreading Awareness about Organ Donation: The campaign aims to educate people about brain stem death, deceased organ donation, and the need to control illegal practices associated with organ transplantation.
- Dispelling Myths and Misconceptions: There are several misconceptions surrounding organ donation that deter people from participating. The campaign seeks to bust these myths and provide accurate information to the public.
- Increasing Brain Stem Death Identification: Hospitals play a crucial role in identifying potential organ donors. The campaign urges hospitals to identify and declare cases of brain stem death promptly to save more lives through organ donation.
