New Delhi, October 28, 2023 – The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a significant step towards fostering national unity and commemorating the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the “Iron Man of India.” Every year, October 31st is celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, to honor his pivotal role in unifying a diverse and independent India.

In a circular dated 27th October 2023, Dr. Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics) at CBSE, urged all the affiliated schools to participate actively in ‘Run for Unity’ and various other activities to mark this important day. The circular outlined a series of events and initiatives designed to promote unity, integrity, and security in the nation.

Pledge for Unity

As part of the commemoration, CBSE schools across the country are encouraged to administer the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ Pledge during their morning assemblies. The pledge serves as a solemn commitment to uphold the unity and integrity of the nation, in line with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision for a united India.

Running for Unity

One of the highlight events of the day is the ‘Run for Unity.’ Students are invited to participate in short or long-distance runs, allowing them to show their support for national unity in a tangible way. The run can coincide with the morning assembly or commence at the beginning of the school day. It is scheduled for 31st October 2023, preferably at 7-8 am.

During the ‘Run for Unity,’ Principals, senior faculty members, or students may speak about the remarkable role Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played in integrating the diverse regions of India. This serves to educate the young minds about the historical significance of this day.

The participation in the run is not limited to students alone; the circular encourages the involvement of families, staff members, and the local community. It goes further to emphasize inclusivity by reaching out to street children from marginalized areas, including children with disabilities.

Educational Activities

The circular also calls for schools to organize various educational activities, including debates and speeches on Sardar Patel’s extraordinary contributions to uniting India. Special school assemblies dedicated to his memory and exhibitions showcasing his life and contributions are also encouraged.

Reporting and Participation

To ensure a comprehensive record of all activities, CBSE schools are required to upload a brief report of the ‘Run for Unity’ and other events by 4th November 2023. This reporting will allow CBSE to measure the scale and impact of these activities.

A Call to Unite

The ‘Run for Unity’ initiative, along with other commemorative activities, is a fitting tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who dedicated his life to strengthening the bonds of the nation. By participating in these activities, students and schools not only pay homage to this visionary leader but also reaffirm their commitment to a united, integrated, and secure India.
