President of India appoints Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, according to Notifications dated 24th July 2023.

SemiconIndia 2023 exhibition to be inaugurated in Gandhinagar by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Leading semiconductor companies to showcase innovations in 150 stalls. Micron Technology and Applied Materials have pledged substantial investments in India’s semiconductor ecosystem. The event represents India’s journey to become a global powerhouse in Semiconductor Design, Manufacturing, and Technology Development. President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, awards the National Geoscience Awards-2022 (NGA) to twenty-two geoscientists, including Dr. Om Narain Bhargava for Lifetime Achievement. The awards recognize excellence in various fields of geosciences, contributing to sustainable mineral development and mineral exploration. Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasizes the strategic importance of critical minerals for India’s development. The President highlights the significance of geoscience in natural disaster protection and economic growth.

India-Argentina Biotech & Agri Startup Exchange: Strengthening Bilateral Trade & Research Ties

India and Argentina agree on bilateral exchange of young researchers and startups in Biotechnology and Agriculture. They will hold comprehensive talks between delegations from academia, R&D Institutes, and Industry in Science & Technology and Biotechnology. India is the 4th largest trading partner of Argentina, with bilateral trade reaching USD 6.4 billion in 2022. Argentina hosts Indian companies with over USD 1 billion investment, and a new assembly line of Royal Enfield was inaugurated there in 2020.

Cyber Surakshit Bharat: NeGD’s 38th CISO Deep Dive Training Programme Empowers Government IT Officials

NeGD organized its 38th CISO Deep Dive Training Programme under MeitY’s Cyber Surakshit Bharat initiative. The program aims to raise awareness about cyber-crime and build capacities of CISOs and IT officials in government departments to combat cyber-attacks. It was launched in 2018 as a partnership between the Government and industry under the PPP model, training over 1,464 officials by July 2023.

Health Benefits of Jal Jeevan Mission: Averting 400k Diarrhoeal Deaths & Saving 14M DALYs – Minister’s Report

WHO report estimates that implementing Jal Jeevan Mission in India would avert 400,000 diarrhoeal deaths and save 14 million DALYs, resulting in cost savings of up to 8.2 lakh Crore. Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel, provided this information in Rajya Sabha.

Transforming Rural Sanitation: Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) and IHHLs

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) aims to make rural areas of India Open Defecation Free (ODF). Over 10 crore Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs) were constructed by 2019. Phase-II of SBM(G) continues with a goal to sustain ODF status and provide sanitation facilities for new households. Financial incentives and support are offered to construct IHHLs and Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs). Funds allocated to states/UTs under SBM(G) in recent years are detailed in the Annexure.

Protecting Drinking Water: India’s Jal Jeevan Mission & Water Quality Initiatives

The Indian government is working to improve safe drinking water access in rural areas through the Jal Jeevan Mission. They offer technical and financial assistance to states for water quality training, awareness generation, and communication campaigns. States can use up to 2% of funds for Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance (WQM&S) activities. They are training women in villages to conduct water quality testing. The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and CPCB regulations are also in place to prevent water pollution.

Reviving River Ganges: A Model Village and Progress in Water Quality | NMCG Updates 2023

The village Seechewal in Punjab’s Jalandhar district is considered a model village for the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). The NMCG promotes grey water management, use of treated water for irrigation, and tree plantation on river banks. Budgetary provisions and funds allocated to NMCG for Ganga rejuvenation projects from FY 2014-15 to 30 June 2023 are provided. Water quality assessment shows improvements in the health of river Ganga due to interventions in various states.

Improving Groundwater Recovery in India: State-wise Initiatives and Conservation Measures

India’s groundwater resources have shown overall improvement (groundwater recovery) in 2022 compared to 2017. However, states like Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan still face challenges with overexploited units. Initiatives like the Jal Shakti Abhiyan and Atal Bhujal Yojana aim to promote sustainable water management, while various states have implemented water conservation schemes like ‘Mukhyamantri Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan’ and ‘Mission Kakatiya.’ Additionally, measures such as rainwater harvesting, artificial recharge structures, and micro irrigation techniques are being encouraged.

India-UK 11th FTA Talks Concluded: Progress and Trade Opportunities Discussed

India and UK concluded their eleventh round of talks for the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The discussions covered 9 policy areas in 42 separate sessions. Union Minister Piyush Goyal visited the UK, meeting officials to discuss FTA progress and trade opportunities. The twelfth round of negotiations is scheduled for the coming months. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal also visited the UK to review the progress.

Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman praised the Income Tax Department’s efforts during the 164th Income Tax Day celebrations in New Delhi. She appreciated taxpayers, tax practitioners, and stakeholders for contributing to India’s economic growth without increasing tax rates. The focus was on systemic changes in tax administration to widen the tax base and ensure transparency and taxpayer-friendliness. UP Set for Hat-Trick Win in PMAY-Urban Beneficiary Awards: Recognition for Active Participation and Progress

The Uttar Pradesh government is set to achieve a hat-trick victory in the PMAY-Urban Beneficiary Awards. They have been winning these awards for two consecutive times and are likely to win it for the third time in a row. The awards aim to recognize the active participation of PMAY-U beneficiaries and assess the progress of the scheme in the state.

A committee has been formed at the municipal level to oversee the process. The awards are being organized to mark the completion of eight years of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)- Urban (2015-2021). The government of India had previously awarded Uttar Pradesh for its exceptional performance in the PMAY (Urban) Awards in 2019 and 2022. To secure the first position in the awards, the department has set parameters to assess the performance of cities, and teams will be formed at the municipal level to address pending projects.

NSA participated in the Friends of BRICS Meeting in Johannesburg, discussing cybersecurity challenges. India pledged to support the Global South in overcoming resource limitations. He also highlighted the connection between cyber criminals and terrorists, especially their use of social media for radicalization and communication. Jammu’s Cannabis Medicine Project: Pioneering India’s Therapeutic Cannabis Research

Jammu is set to lead India’s first Cannabis Medicine Project in partnership with a Canadian firm, aiming to produce drugs for neuropathies, diabetic pains, cancer, and epilepsy. The project is significant for Atma-Nirbhar Bharat, promoting medicinal uses of cannabis and attracting investments in Jammu and Kashmir. CSIR-IIIM plays a crucial role in this pioneering research, exploring therapeutic properties of cannabis and developing indigenous varieties to suit local environmental conditions. The research aims to complete pre-clinical and clinical studies for FDA-approved drugs and other therapeutic treatments.
