PGII and IMEC Initiative : Unlocking Investment and Strengthening Connectivity

New Delhi, India – In a remarkable display of international cooperation and a commitment to fostering global infrastructure development, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of India and the President of the United States, H.E. Mr. Joe Biden, co-chaired a special event on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). This event took place on September 9, 2023, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit hosted in New Delhi.

Bridging the Infrastructure Gap

The primary objective of this event was to facilitate increased investment in infrastructure development and enhance connectivity across multiple facets linking India, the Middle East, and Europe. The gathering witnessed the participation of influential leaders from various countries and organizations, including the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and the World Bank.

PGII: This developmental initiative is strategically designed to address the infrastructure deficit in developing nations while also contributing to the global progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

IMEC: The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor comprises an Eastern Corridor that connects India to the Gulf region and a Northern Corridor linking the Gulf region to Europe. This ambitious project encompasses a comprehensive network of railways, ship-rail transit, and road transport routes.

Promoting Economic Integration

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in his address, emphasized the paramount importance of physical, digital, and financial connectivity. He underscored that IMEC is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering economic integration between India and Europe, while simultaneously bolstering ties with the Middle East.

A Multilateral Commitment

At the event, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on IMEC. This MOU was signed by key stakeholders, including India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, UAE, the European Union, Italy, France, and Germany, reaffirming their collective commitment to this transformative initiative.
