1.1 3rd G20 Health Working Group Meeting: Addressing Global South Challenges

The 3rd G20 Health Working Group meeting in Hyderabad will address the challenges faced by the Global South. India’s G20 Presidency focuses on three priorities: health emergencies, access to affordable medical countermeasures, and digital health. India aims to create global convergence on a global health architecture. The meeting will have around 180 members, 10 invited countries, and 22 international organizations. The delegates will visit Genome Valley to see India’s research and development and pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities. Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya addressed a vaccine research discussion during the event.

1.2 Accelerating E-cooking Transition: Centre Organizes Conference in New Delhi

Centre to hold conference on accelerating e-cooking transition in New Delhi. The conference aims to promote energy-efficient and affordable e-cooking solutions and reduce dependence on imports. Topics of discussion include finance, demand aggregation, carbon credits, and consumer-centric approaches. The transition to e-cooking is crucial for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

1.3 Defence Minister’s Bilateral Talks with US and German Counterparts to Enhance Defence Cooperation

India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, will hold bilateral talks with the US Secretary of Defence and the German Federal Minister of Defence on June 5 and 6. The discussions will focus on bilateral defence cooperation and industrial collaboration. The US Secretary of Defence will visit India for the second time, while the German Minister will also engage with defence start-ups and visit naval and shipbuilding facilities. India’s defence startup industry is experiencing growth, supported by government initiatives such as “Make in India.” The government has approved a list of strategically important indigenous defence production units, aiming for greater self-sufficiency.

1.4 Kishtwar: North India’s Major Power Hub with 6,000 MW Generation Potential

Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar is set to become North India’s major “power hub” with the completion of ongoing power projects, generating around 6,000 MW of power. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh reviewed the progress of hydroelectric power projects in Kishtwar and Doda districts, emphasizing the untapped potential of the Chenab region. Several projects, including Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar, and Kirthai II, are expected to contribute to the power supply. The Minister highlighted the improved infrastructure and development in Kishtwar, including reduced travel time, an airport, educational institutions, and welfare schemes. These regions are expected to play a crucial role in India’s future growth.

1.5 88% of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS Wage Payments Made via ABPS: Important Updates

About 88% of wage payments under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) have been made through the Aadhaar Based Payment Bridge system (ABPS) till May 2023. The government encourages states to organize camps and follow up with beneficiaries to achieve 100% ABPS.

Workers should be requested to provide their Aadhaar number, but work should not be refused if they don’t have it. Job cards cannot be deleted solely based on the worker’s eligibility for ABPS. ABPS is considered a safer and faster way of payment transfer. Out of the total active beneficiaries, 77.81% are eligible for ABPS. States have been asked to ensure 100% ABPS adoption. The ABPS helps in curbing corruption and ensuring payments reach genuine beneficiaries.

2.1 Poson Poya Day Celebrations in Sri Lanka: Commemorating Buddhism’s Arrival

Sri Lanka celebrates Poson Poya Day, marking the arrival of Buddhism in the country over 2,000 years ago. It is the second most important Buddhist celebration after Vesak. The main centers of celebration are Mihintale and Anuradhapura, attracting pilgrims. Devotees climb Mihintale hill in white attire to honor Arahat Mahinda’s sermons. The festivities include religious observances, illuminations, and the distribution of free food and beverages to devotees.

3.1 Empowering Startups: Launch of Handholding Support for National Startup Awards 2022 Winners and Finalists

Handholding support has been launched to assist startups, providing investor pitching, government connections, corporate and unicorn engagements, brand showcase, and international market access. The support was initiated for the winners and finalists of the National Startup Awards 2022, offering learning opportunities, networking, and trust-building for their brands. The Secretary of DPIIT launched the program, which includes virtual and physical sessions, delegations, showcases, and specialized assistance. Different tracks have been created to cater to the startups’ specific needs, with several partners involved in the execution. The National Startup Awards recognize exceptional startups that have demonstrated excellence in financial, social, and economic aspects.

3.2 Wheat Procurement Surpasses Last Year, Benefitting 21.27 Lakh Farmers

Wheat procurement this year has exceeded last year’s total, benefiting 21.27 lakh farmers. The agriculture sector’s progress and high foodgrain production have contributed to this success. Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana have been major contributors to the procurement. Government relaxations and the involvement of co-operatives and panchayats have improved outreach. Rice procurement is also going well. The combined stock of wheat and rice in the Central Pool is sufficient to meet the country’s needs. Overall, the third advance estimates for crop production in the current agricultural year are positive, with an estimated foodgrain production of 3305.34 lakh tonnes.

3.3 May 2023 GST Collection Jumps 12% to Rs 1.57 Lakh Crore, Signaling Growth in India’s Tax Revenues


May 2023 GST collection rises by 12% to Rs 1.57 lakh crore compared to the same month last year. The revenue from import of goods and domestic transactions, including import of services, also increased by 12% and 11% respectively. GST has proven to be a successful economic reform for India, simplifying compliance and creating a uniform tax system. The implementation of GST has eliminated human involvement, increased transparency, and achieved the goal of One Nation, One Tax.

4.1 Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team started their Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 with a dominant 22-0 victory against Uzbekistan in Japan. Next match against Malaysia.

4.2 Khelo India University Games 2022 Concludes in Varanasi with Punjab University as Winners

Curtains were brought down on the Khelo India University Games 2022 in Varanasi, with Punjab University emerging as the overall winner. The event was praised by Shri Anurag Singh Thakur as the best Khelo India University Games ever organized by Uttar Pradesh. The closing ceremony included a tribute to the victims of a rail accident in Odisha. In his address, Shri Yogi Adityanath highlighted the growth of sports in India and the efforts being made to promote sports infrastructure. Shri Anurag Singh Thakur commended Uttar Pradesh for successfully organizing the games and expressed the vision of making India a sports superpower.
